Daniel Hawkins: CEO MIP

Starting his career at F&C Asset Management, Daniel specialised in Portfolio Management and Risk Control techniques before transitioning to a career in trading and research with a number of major global investment banks, culminating as European Head of Derivative Strategy at Lehman Brothers Europe. As a co-founder of Mariana Capital, he has practical experience of taking businesses from start-up to fully scaled operations. He is a CFA Charter holder and has a deep understanding of the fundamentals driving company valuations and performance. Daniel holds an MSc in Theoretical Physics from Durham University.

Mark Thomson: Head of Risk

Mark began his career as an Exotic Options trader at Lehman Brothers, rising to Executive Director level and running the Single Stocks Exotics business. Mark then moved to the risk management side as CRO for several Global Event Driven and Event Arbitrage Funds, before joining Mariana Investment Partners as Head of Risk and Compliance. Mark has a Masters’ Degree in Physics from the University of Oxford and a Certificate in Quantitative Finance.

Malcolm Ritchie: Head of Compliance

Malcolm is an experienced investment professional working for over 25 years as an accountant, derivatives trader and risk professional with major global firms including PwC London, HSBC, Citibank, Lehman Brothers and Nomura. He has held senior equity derivatives trading roles at Citibank, at Lehman Brothers as Head of World Book and Index Trading and at Nomura where he led the Index Trading team. He also has significant project management, forensic accounting and complex asset valuation experience through his work with PwC Switzerland in the liquidation of Lehman Brothers Finance SA Zurich. He also acts as Portfolio Manager for a number of venture capital and energy funds.

Mark Diab: Portfolio Manager

Mark is a former CEO and Head of MENA Equities of Man Group in Dubai. Prior to this, Mark was at GLG and Amwal Qatar where he was MD of Asset Management and responsible for their Equity Asset Management Division, including the management of two mutual funds, several institutional client portfolios and Amwal’s own proprietary capital. A member of their Investment Committee, he also represented the company as a Director on the board of several companies including Gulf Formaldehyde, a subsidiary of QAFCO. Previously Mark was Vice President with SDC Group in London, responsible for their listed equity investments and direct investment activities globally. Mark began his career as an Auditor with Ernst & Young in Abu Dhabi. He holds an MBA from the University of Cambridge and a BA in Economics from the American University of Beirut.

Kingsley Minty: Portfolio Manager

Kingsley has been a proprietary trader and portfolio manager for 19 years working in both London and New York. He specializes in global cross-border event-driven strategies with a typical time horizon of up to three months. Prior to joining Mariana, Kingsley was a Senior Portfolio Manager with RCM in Bermuda. In 2006 Kingsley co-founded Aldersgate Investment Managers LLP in London, a proprietary trading firm, where he delivered high-quality annual returns and was responsible for key operational and structural aspects of the firm. In 2000 he was part of the founding management team of First New York Securities (FNYS, London), the largest proprietary equity trading firm in the world, where he ran highly profitable trading strategies and was responsible for London operations. Prior to this Kingsley worked for UBS Warburg as an Index Arbitrage trader in Paris. He holds a Masters’ in Accountancy from Aberdeen University and qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1995 with E&Y.

David Blake: Portfolio Manager

David has twenty years of fixed income portfolio management experience. Before joining Mariana David was head of international fixed income at Northern Trust Asset Management, managing over $40bn in money markets, short duration, global active, and, smart beta assets across multiple currencies for the world’s largest investors. Prior to heading the desk, David was a senior portfolio manager responsible for securities lending cash reinvestment, G7 rates, and, investment-grade credit. David started his career in 2000, joining the UK Debt Management Office as a sterling repo trader. In 2002 David established and subsequently managed a segregated pool of short-term fixed income securities for the UK Government. David graduated as a Master of Physics from Lancaster University in 1999.

Sholto Toner: Portfolio Manager

Sholto began his career in 2013 on the Operations side at the boutique broking firm Mariana UFP, primarily focused on the Clearing and Settlement side of the firm’s Futures/Options and Bond trading activities. Sholto quickly progressed to be responsible for all Middle Office at Mariana; a position he held until joining the Front Office Fixed Income Broking team, where he quickly developed a strong understanding of the mechanics of fixed income products as wells as forming lasting relationships with many counterparties in the Fixed Income market. As the fund offering at Mariana Investment Partners began to grow, he moved onto the investment side and joined the team as an Execution Trader in 2016 specialising in Fixed Income products. At the start of 2019, Sholto was appointed portfolio manager, focusing on Fixed Income strategies.

Elton James: Portfolio Manager

Elton attended the London School of Economics 1992-1995 BSc (Hons) Economics. After graduating Elton joined JPMorgan where he worked on the internal treasury, funding and liquidity management trading desks. He then joined Barclays de Zoete Wedd (later Barclays Capital) to become a specialist in derivative trading. Elton then spent 15 years as a senior derivatives trader and later portfolio manager at Barclays Capital, Lehman Brothers and Merrill Lynch, managing the proprietary trading teams at Lehman and Barclays Capital. In early 2010 Elton founded Mariana Capital Markets LLP (now Mariana UFP), a bespoke financial services firm based in London where Elton served as CEO until 2016. In 2016 Elton decided to focus on developing the firm’s investment offering “Mariana Investment Partners LLP”. Mariana now has a long track record in offering both fixed return products and structured capital at risk products to the broader market, as well as trading and advisory services to a number of investment funds.
